Today in the Garden 3-16-2020

Every day there is something to observe, something to learn, something to celebrate while in the garden. You just have to be looking for it!

Today was especially rewarding because my rosemary plants arrived! I ordered them from a reputable nursery using some funds that I had stashed away, and also spent the equivalent of a few hours puzzling over the best places to plant them.

I ordered two varieties to try growing here in my 7A climate: Tuscan Blue and Foliera. Both are supposed to be hardy down to zero Fahrenheit, so I’m willing to take some risks. Rosemary is a Mediterranean plant, and it likes arid conditions. Needless to say, this is not the Mediterranean. The soil here actually retains moisture pretty well, sometimes too well. I am hoping that the amendments I made to the soil around the rosemary plants will be enough to make them comfortable here in the summer. Then I’ll only have the winter to worry about. This year we stayed far above zero degrees, so as long as we keep that trend they should be alright. At least they’ll have a full summer to get established before braving the cold.

The Tuscan Blue variety is the tallest, so I placed it along the front of my property. Hopefully, it will fill in nicely to eventually serve as an edible hedge. The Foliera variety is going to surround my blueberry bushes that are also new additions this year. Since this is an experiment, I have started with two plants of each variety. If things go well, I will expand them as planned. If they bust, then I have minimized my investment.

But for now, I am positively excited to have them all here. They smell so good, and I am confident that they will prove a great addition to the overall landscape.

Thank God for the opportunity to experiment like this and the freedom to learn like this. What risks are you taking in your gardening experience?
